Parent/ Child Activities
Activities to do with your child relating to 1st grade measurement.
Common Core Standards are included. Enjoy!
Paperclip Chain Scavenger Hunt |
Materials:
-6 paperclips -Paper -Pencil Procedure: Clip the six paperclips together. Go on a hunt around the house. Look for five objects that are longer than the paperclip chain and five objects that are shorter. For the five shorter objects, determine how many paperclips long they are to the nearest paperclip. Draw pictures of your observations. |
Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.A.2
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1.5
Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Foot Fun |
Materials:
-Construction paper -Markers -Scissors Procedure: Trace mom's foot, dad's foot, and your child's foot onto construction paper. Cut out the footprints. Discuss who has the longest footprint, who has the shortest footprint, and if any of the footprints are the same. Have your child order them from longest to shortest or shortest to longest. This activity is good measuring practice for comparing lengths of three objects. |
Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.A.1
Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1.3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify
something that is not understood.

Step Map |
Materials:
-Grid paper -Construction paper -Marker -Sheet of regular printer paper Procedure: In your home, have your child estimate how many steps long a hallway is. Then measure how long it actually it is by having your child put one foot in front of the other. Trace your child's foot to make footprints and cut them out. Measure other objects and rooms like the length of a bed or the living room. Record these lengths. Using grid paper help your child draw a line that is the is the same number of boxes as steps taken. So, for example, if your bed is 8 of your feet long then the line on the grid paper should be 8 boxes long. This activitiy is great because it allows you to compare lengths (i.e. See how many beds fit in the living room). |
